New Fallout TV Show Has Connection to ASMS Academics
You may have watched Amazon Prime’s new post-apocalyptic TV series Fallout, which stars Ella Purnell and Walton Goggins. You may have even played the video games it is based on, including titles published by Bethesda Softworks and Interplay Entertainment. But did you know that the Fallout franchise has been part of ASMS culture since 2015?
Students who attend classes in the ASMS Humanities Building have probably noticed a Fallout-themed display case on the first floor. It features boxed copies of Fallout games and samples of student academic essays. This exhibit was established in Winter Term of 2015 to showcase the work of students in the first-ever Video Game Studies course offered at ASMS, in which students interpreted games in the Fallout series as digital texts.
The course has been offered intermittently since then, with display items occasionally being updated with new student work. In 2018, creative staff from Fallout 2 and Fallout: New Vegas were interviewed by ASMS students, leading to the discovery that some of the writers attended our sister institutions in the National Consortium of Secondary STEM Schools.
The tagline for the Fallout franchise is “War never changes,” but what never changes at ASMS is the fact that our students get to take uniquely amazing classes!
