ASMS Students Attend Black History Month Screening of the 2022 "Descendant" Documentary
On February 1, ASMS students visited the Ben May branch of the Mobile Public Library to attend a Black History Month screening of the 2022 documentary Descendant.
The film is about the last slave ship to land in the Americas and its legacy in the Mobile area. Descendant was co-written and co-produced by Professor Kern Jackson of the University of South Alabama, and it features interviews with many Mobile natives. The students were greatly impacted by the film's content and were excited to recognize community members on-screen.
After viewing the documentary, the students traveled to the Local History and Genealogy Library, where they visited the vault storage area and even saw scholars working with the Clotilda special collection.
ASMS's Black Student Union will host a discussion of the film later this month, and they hope to meet with members of the Clotilda Descendents Association.
