ASMS Junior Named Big and Little of the Year with Big Brothers Big Sisters Program
Story by ASMS junior, Julia Schwartz
On Wednesday, November 8, ASMS junior, Marcus McPherson, and Mr. Benjamin Ford were honored with the Big and Little of the Year award. The award is given by the Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Central Gulf Coast as part of a national program which originally started in 1904. The program website states, "Big Brothers Big Sisters helps children realize their potential and build their futures. We nurture children and strengthen communities. And we couldn't do any of it without you." Marcus explained Big Brothers Big Sisters as giving children someone to talk to and support them throughout school and young adulthood. The program matches children with mentors who guide them through challenges to help them reach their full potential.
Marcus and his Big, Mr. Ford, have been paired together for 8 years and were recognized as having the ideal Big and Little relationship. “Some things that make a good Big/Little relationship are that the Big and Little guide each other, make sure that they are both alright, and talk about important things like life after high school,” said Marcus. He also shared, “I was enrolled in BBBS back when I was in elementary school, and some things I've enjoyed about the program are that the Bigs in the program truly care about the Littles, and they actively want to listen and get involved in your life."
