Biography: Derek Barry was raised in Montgomery, Alabama before attending the University of Alabama, and serving in the U.S. Army as a Tank Platoon Leader in Operation Desert Storm during the Gulf War. After completing his Master’s degree, Mr. Barry began his career in education as an Instructor and later, Department Chair at Iowa Central Community College in Fort Dodge, Iowa. After six years in Iowa, Mr. Barry returned to sweet home Alabama where he has enjoyed using his skills as an educator and leader for the last fifteen years at Alabama School of Math and Science.
Professional Areas of Expertise: African American Studies, Women Studies, Twentieth Century America, American Political Culture and History, Modern Civil Rights Movement, American Popular Culture.
