Mathematics

Mathematics is the study of numbers, quantities, shapes, and space. Math is essentially in everything that we do. It can be studied in its own right, which is known as pure mathematics, or how it is applied to other disciplines such as physics, computer science, and engineering. Those who study mathematics generally have strong analytical, logical, and computational skills.

Within the math department, students will learn concepts in algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and precalculus. Many students will also learn aspects of calculus, statistics, linear algebra, differential equations, and visual mathematics. Students will be provided the opportunity to develop a variety of useful skills, including computational, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills. Students who take every mathematics course offered at ASMS will almost complete the equivalent of an undergraduate major in mathematics, and in fact, many of our courses are accepted for college credit, even without an AP exam, at universities across the state.

Mathematics is an inherently collaborative discipline, where experts share their knowledge and discuss ideas with one another. Thus, student success within the math department is driven by the desire to learn mathematics and the ability to cooperate with others. Studying with classmates and asking questions to professors will help students improve their problem-solving skills and their ability to contribute to the collective body of mathematical knowledge.

Students who enjoy mathematics go on to major in areas such as pure or applied mathematics, engineering, computer science, economics, or finance, and may pursue careers as data or research analysts, auditors, computer programmers, economists, software developers, data scientists, actuaries, and statisticians. Intense study in mathematics is useful in other careers as well because of the strong problem-solving skills acquired, and many of the world's top doctors, lawyers, politicians, musicians, authors, and athletes majored in mathematics.
