English

English encompasses reading, writing, speaking, and thinking critically about the literary and rhetorical traditions of the English language. English students write analytical essays and creative prose and poetry, they conduct research and discussions, they perform debates and speeches, and they become aware of cultural history and the diversity of human experience by engaging with texts from different eras and places.

English classes at ASMS teach students college-level composition and analysis, research writing, public speaking, argumentation, close reading, and literary history. Offerings in the curriculum include full surveys of American and British Literature, two Advanced Placement courses, Journalism, Debate, Creative Writing, African-American Literature, Dystopian Fiction, Shakespeare on the Stage, and other elective courses.

Whether the focus is reading medieval literature, reviewing contemporary journalism, or composing fiction, ASMS English classes help students develop advanced skills in interpretation, analysis, argumentation, writing, speaking, and communications crucial to successful learning across the curriculum. English classes may also better prepare students for success in the reading and writing sections of their college preparatory exams.

The skills that are acquired in English classes provide an excellent foundation for a number of college majors in the humanities and social sciences, including Speech and Communications, Education, Psychology, Sociology, Political Science, and English Language and Literature, to name a few. Pre-professional Programs and careers that welcome a background in the study of English include Law, Library Science, Public Relations, Marketing, Human Services, Secondary Education, and Journalism. Being able to read comprehensively, communicate effectively in both speaking and writing, and argue convincingly are invaluable skills.
